| Regular issue/definitive stamps, proofs and colour trials | |
| 1867-69, 5pa yellow-orange, unused block of four, showing the four types (II-I / IV-III). Very fresh, well-centred, fully sound, full OG (other than minuscule gum lift on SE stamp), with usual hinge remnants and peripheral perf. reinforcements. A scarce multiple! (Nile Post D8; Zeheri 8; Balian 11m; Scott 8; SG 11, cat. £108 as singles!). Signed C. F. Hass. | £40 |
| 1872, 10pa mauve, variety “missing mouth of sphinx”, the constant and major flaw of position 24 (1 in 200 stamps), perf. 12½ x 13¼. Fine, bright and fresh, fully sound, used, with neat “ALESSAND(RIA)” cds, leaving the variety brilliantly visible! (NP D15a; Bal. 24b, cat. £44; Zeh. 15b). Very scarce! | £19 |
| 1872 (11 Oct.), outer folded letter sheet franked by 1pi rose-red LITHOGRAPH (fully sound, superbly centred), perf. 12½ x 13¼, showing var, Cracked ‘1’ at lower-right” (NP D22b; Bal 22a; var of Zeh 17i, Scott 22m, SG 27.I). Face has oval sender’s cachet and 2 strikes (1 tying adhesive) of “V.R POSTE EGIZIANE / ZAGAZIG / 11 OTT TI 1872” cds, ESC type III-2.5, but with year and accounting mark transposed! On reverse is CAIRO” cds same day/same type. Fragile sheet has a couple of surface faults, some neat repairs and strengthening inside. Signed C. F. Hass on reverse. A stamp very rarely found on cover! | £80 |
| 1872, 5pi yellow-green, perf 13¼ all round, with good colour, fully sound unused, hinged on full, original gum, an unusually well-centred example of this stamp (notorious for poor centring), with wide margins at top, left and bottom edges, perfs just touching frameline at right. The second-rarest typographed stamp of the 1872 issue, missing from all but the most advanced collections of classic Egypt — and seldom found in such fine condition! Very conservatively priced at $375 in NP and Scott, £275 in SG. More realistically valued by Balian at £318 (NP D20h; Bal. 29g; Zeh. 20d; Scott 25a; SG 34.II). Signed C. F. Hass. | £100 |
| 1874, 10pa gray, perf. 13¼ x 12½, the variety, “damaged frameline at upper-left”, position 131 on the sheet of 200 stamps, F-VF, fresh, fully sound, hinged on full original gum. A nice example of a scarce positional variety! (NP D24s at $75; Bal. 32ei at £44). | £25 |
| 1875, 1pi red, perf. 12½, the error of doubled vertical perforations (at left-hand side), F-VF, fully sound used, with a near-complete Sept. ’78 “PORTO-SAID” postmark (unlisted in NP; Balian 34e, undervalued at only £26.50). Signed C. F. Hass. | £16 |
| 1874, 5pi green, compound perforation of 12½ x 13¼. An early Impression (non-oily, all design details clear and open), a lovely example of the rarest stamp of the 1874 issue. Decently centred, with its frame clear on all sides and a jumbo margin at left. Fully sound and fresh, unused, hinged on full original gum (NP D29l at $350; Bal. 37h at £310; Scott 25d at $350; SG 41c at £300). A choice example of a truly elusive stamp, signed C. F. Hass. | £120 |
| 1879, “10 PARAS” surcharge on 2½pi violet, perf. 12½, the variety, “indented bottom outer frameline”, from position 92 of the third state of the 2pi forme (this deep indentation occurred during the second substitution of stereo 102, and was caused by pressure from the tool used in prying out the defective stereo). Fine unused, super-fresh, full original gum, with a neat paper hinge remnant (NP D31g at $75; Bal. 39b at £53; Zeh. 22n). A rare third-issue variety! Signed C. F. Hass. | £30 |
| 1902-13, 5 mills, imperforate De La Rue plate proof in black, on thin, white, chalk-surfaced card, as originally glued to a heavy, olive-buff, composite card (.105” total thickness). A block of four, representing positions 57-58, 77-78 of the NE pane of the unique 5m black proof sheet of 240 stamps. VF and fresh, fully sound but for a slight, isolated edge defect on its NW stamp, a result of having been cut from the master proof sheet. (NP page 121; Bal. 90P; Scott 48P, SG 63dP). A truly rare item of the De La Rue (“fourth”) issue, seldom offered anywhere! Signed C. F. Hass. | £135 |
| 1914, the De La Rue “Views”, imperforate plate proofs on gummed, unwatermarked paper, in horizontal pairs — the 1m, 2m, 3m, 4m, 5m, 10m and 20m – seven values (NP page 127; Bal 128 and part of 129; Scott 50-59P; SG 73-82P), all F-VF, Fresh MNH (some with vertical scissors cuts slightly into the central gutters, as is often seen – insignificant, and mentioned only for accuracy). A nice group of Imperforates! | £35 |
| 1922, 20m olive with the error inverted “Kingdom” overprint, lithographed at Cairo (“type I”), one of probably only 110 examples possible (two different panes existed, but it is likely that only about 10 examples survive from one of them). Fully sound and fresh, unused, hinged on full original gum. As is usual for stamps from this error sheet, there is minor, insignificant gum toning in a small dot, not visible on face (NP D86Ib; Bal 176b at £230; Scott 86a (litho); SG 106a (litho) at £225). Scarce error, signed C. F. Hass. | £105 |
| 1922, 100m gray-black with the error of double “Kingdom” overprint, lithographed at Cairo (“type I”), one of only 100 examples possible (one pane existed). Fully sound and fresh, unused, hinged on full original gum, with a partly erased, faint pencil notation on back (NP D89 Ib at $400; Bal 178b at £265.50; Scott 88b; SG 108b at £325). A scarce error, Signed C. F. Hass. | £105 |
| 1923, 50 mills blue-green “First Fuad” portrait series, completely imperforate on gummed, watermarked paper, a lovely horizontal pair, from positions 52-53 of the unique imperforate sheet of 100 stamps. Super-fresh and mint, never hinged, with wide margins on all sides! There is an invisible, horizontal fold in the white margin at top, not touching the stamp images, and certainly not a detraction. Because many of the stamps on the sheet were creased and/or torn, substantially fewer than 100 fully sound examples exist! (NP D99f; Bal 231d, valued at £531 for two singles; an unlisted variety of Zeh 90, Scott 100 and SG 119). A rare item for the “First Fuad” specialist, signed C. F. Hass. | £80 |
| 1923, 100 mills purple “First Fuad” portrait series, completely imperforate on gummed, watermarked paper, a vertical pair, mint never-hinged. Top stamp is superb, but for very tiny wrinkle (unobvious) at its bottom edge. A horizontal fold runs through the white gutter between the stamps (away from images) and the lower stamp has a (not glaringly obvious) horizontal crease (NP D100e; Bal 232b, valued £531 for two singles; unlisted variety of Zeh 90, Scott 100, SG 119). Rare item for the “First Fuad” specialist, signed C. F. Hass. | £35 |
| 1927, “Second Fuad” portrait issue 5 mills, an imperforate horizontal pair, on gummed, watermarked paper, printed in a very pale chestnut shade, type II (diagonal screen), 18mm x 22¾mm, showing an extremely faint overall “ghost image” of a double impression (2.5mm to the left of, and 0.75mm above, the main image). Fresh, VF MNH (NP D112n, greatly undervalued!; unlisted by Balian; a variety of Scott 135b and SG 156). From the Egyptian Royal Collection, with the Arabic “Qubbah Palace” backstamp Only 100 stamps existed … a “Second Fuad” rarity! | £95 |
| 1932, bilingual “MILLS 100” provisional surcharge on £E1 “First Fuad” portrait issue (SG 188 at £190; Scott 167). Only 3750 examples were surcharged! A super-fresh, fine unused example, very lightly hinged on full original gum. Signed C. F. Hass. | £55 |
| 1936, “Young Farouk” 5 mills (perforated, on gummed, watermarked paper), like the issued 5m Definitive stamp of 1937, but an essay/colour trial in bright violet, the colour of the issued 10m value (NP RPD140ct(b), substantially undervalued; Bal. 386b violet). VF MNH. From the Egyptian Royal Collection, with the Arabic “Qubbah Palace” backstamp. Only 100 existed! | £85 |
| 1937, “Young Farouk” 5 mills booklet stamp, uncut block of 12 (6x2, with margins at left and right) from the specially formatted, 60-stamp panes prepared for stamp booklets. 724 | 1939, “Young Farouk” 200 mills violet, an imperforate plate proof on .007”-thick card, from the Egyptian Royal Collection, with Cancelled” backprint (NP D151b; Bal. 380b), with Minkus “Palm tree ad Pyramid” backstamp, “Guaranteed from the King Farouk Collection”, in blue-green, VF, lightly hinged onto a decorative Minkus “Palace Collections” guarantee card. Few of these “Palace Sale” souvenirs survive! | £10 |
| 1939, “Young Farouk” 50 piastres green and sepia, an imperforate plate proof on .007”-thick card, from the Egyptian Royal Collection, with Cancelled” backprint (NP D153a @$150; Bal. 381e). Superb and fresh. Only 400 examples existed! | £40 |
| 1949, Farouk “Maréchal” £E1 blue and sepia, completely imperforate, with centre misplaced leftward, on gummed, watermarked paper, a super-fresh, superb example, very lightly hinged, with a tiny, natural paper inclusion (with “J.H. STOLOW” guarantee backstamp). Two imperforate sheets with differing misplacement of the centre, each of 50 stamps, were found in the Egyptian Royal Collection (NP D172a, with no mention made of the misplacement; Bal. 420c at £300). A rare and seldom-offered imperforate! | £160 |
| 1951, Farouk “Maréchal” 10 mills violet booklet pane of 6 with two glassine interleaves, with the fully intact, pink-card, front cover (with imprinted text) and back cover, for the 240 mills booklet originally comprising four such panes, sewn at left-hand edge … a tiny ‘miniature sheet’, with selvage on all sides. | The following seven Lots are Colour Trials for the “King of Egypt and Sudan” (“Malek Masr wal Sudan”) overprints of 1952. Each is from the Egyptian Royal Collection. All are backstamped by the Arabic “Qubbah Palace” cartouche. Only 100 examples were printed of each. | |
| 1m Farouk “Maréchal”, colour-trial overprint in brown (issued in black as SG 373 and Scott 299). Very fine mint, never-hinged, with a small paper inclusion (NP page 187; Bal. 1m 487e). | £12 |
| 3m Farouk “Maréchal”, colour-trial overprint in brown. A particularly sought-after stamp, as the issued 3m value, overprinted in blue, was on the 3m “Young Farouk” design (as SG 375 and Scott 301). Therefore the only way this overprint exists on the 3m “Maréchal” stamp is as a colour trial! Very fine, original gum, with a small thin at the top edge, caused by hinge removal (NP page 187; Bal. 3m 487e). | £18 |
| 10m Farouk “Maréchal”, colour-trial opt in green (issued in red, SG 378 and Scott 304). Very fine, full original gum, with small hinge remnant due to removal from “Bileski” card (NP p187; Bal 10m 487d). | £14 |

| 1953, 40 mills sepia Farouk “Maréchal” with 3-bar Portrait Obliteration Overprint, without “King of Egypt and Sudan” overprint, in a F-VF mint, never-hinged block of four. A howlingly scarce stamp with genuine bars, and rarely see as a multiple! It is a sad fact that fully 99% of all examples in circulation are forgeries. This brilliantly fresh block is absolutely genuine, position-plated and signed C. F. Hass (each stamp also bears the small, blue-green “So. P. Eg.” backstamp of the Philatelic Society of Egypt) (NP D224 at $200+; Bal. 529 at £163+; SG 449 at £188+; Scott unlisted). | £80 |
| Commemorative stamps (including Semipostals) | |
| 1925, 10m rose-pink International Geographical Congress, Cairo, the variety, Completely Imperforate, in a superb, mint, never-hinged horizontal pair, sparklingly fresh and pristine, from the first printing (on chalk-surfaced paper). The world’s supply of this lovely variety … only two imperforate sheets (210 stamps) of two different shades/printings … was found in the Egyptian Royal Collection. Given the fact that the two sheets differed, only 105 examples of this shade/printing can exist! (NP C5b; Zeh. 2d; Bal. Commemorative 2b; SG 124a; Scott 106 var.). | £105 |
| 1929, Farouk 9th Birthday Issue, the “Special U.P.U. Advance Printing” set of four (5m, 10m, 15m and 20m) in Unissued Colours, with black centre (5m) or brown centre (others). Extremely fresh unused, very lightly hinged on full, original gum. superbly centred. Only 2000 sets were printed, and very few of those remaining in circulation can match the quality of the set offered here (NP C29c-C32c; Bal. commemoratives 26b-29b at £460; Zeh. 26a-29a; SG 178a-181a at £400). 740 | 1950, 10 mills red-brown and violet Fuad I Desert Institute, the variety, Completely Imperforate, on gummed, watermarked paper, a superb single with wide selvage at left, showing a partial registration crosshair (there is a meaningless vertical fold in the selvage, 8mm to the left of the stamp image). Mint, never-hinged, and rare. Only 80 examples are known, all from the-Egyptian Royal Collection (NP C132a at $150+; Balian commem 134a at £138+; Zeh. 115a; var. of SG 363 and Scott 285. | £70 |

The perforated sheet has a hint of a fingerprint on the gummed side, a couple of small paper inclusions and a minor diagonal crease at its SE corner (approximately a mere 6mm in from the apex); the imperforate sheet has a subtle, and really insignificant, gum bend. A much sought-after pair of sheets as only 1037 of each existed! | £325 |

A stunning multiple of one of the scarcer “inverted watermark” errors of Egypt! | £50 |
| 1907 “O.H.H.S / AMEERY” overprint on the chalk-surfaced De La Rue ‘4th Issue’ 1 mill stamp, the indented “O” variety (position 116 of each 240-stamp sheet), a lovely used block of 15 stamps (5 x 3), fully sound and cancelled by eight full strikes of a bilingual CAIRO / R.D.6 / 7–.III.14” postmark, its south-west-corner stamp showing the variety. | £28 |

| 1913, “O.H.H.S.” overprint, the letters O.H.H.S. in inverted commas/quotation marks on the “Fourth-Issue” 5 mills. A stunning specimen of the rarest Official stamp of Egypt, of which only about 25 examples are known to exist, all of them used, at six different places ? Bani Suwef, Mina el Qamh, Alexandria, Tanta, Sohag & Port Tawfiq (the latter three only recently documented). This example is among those known to survive from the Bani Suwef correspondence. It is neatly cancelled by a partial strike (used in 1914, but the year is not visible) of the English-language “SUWEF / P” of the postmark (NP O8, Balian 113, SG O79 (undervalued in all cases). Signed “ela” (E. L. Angeloglou), with a detailed C. F. Hass colour photocertificate. A great treasure among Egypt’s Official stamps! | £300 |

On reverse is a complete and clear “— VICE-REALI EGIZIANE / ALESSANDRIA / 13 LUGL 69 1.T.” arrival cds of the scarce ESC type II-4, with the word “REGIE”-removed (rated by Smith as “Uncommon”), only five days after the earliest recorded date of 8th July for the use of this device. On the face are two very fine strikes (one tying the adhesive) of the elusive “V.R. POSTE EGIZIANE / MINIE” cds of ESC type III-2.5 (Smith scarcity rating of “40” plus an additional rating of “Scarce” for this type), but with the date as “27 GIU 1870” — also lacking the accounting mark under the year!
