In February, 1935, the question of printing a Jubilee Commemoration stamp of the same design in royal blue with the overprint "Jubilee Commemoration 1935" in red was first raised. After agreement between London and Egypt postoffices, 27,000 were printed in this colour by Messrs. Harrison & Sons from the same dies as the Letter stamp. confusingly the control A33 can be found on one or more booklets sometimes giving rise to the notion that these stamps were printed in that year.
At the same time as these were printed, one or two sheets of the Letter stamps were printed in two shades of brown and in violet. These were not proceeded with, and the only copies which can be recorded are unperforated ones submitted by the printers as proofs. No authority was given for the issue of stamps in these colours, and none was postally used. It is difficult to establish the number of Jubilee stamps which showed the broken "U" variety in the overprint. |
