Date: 9 March, 1853 (Gregorian date)

Addressed to: The Director of the Greek Lycée at Syros.

Postal Markings: Backstamped on arrival at Syros Μαρτ 1853 (Julian date). Marked "20" in red crayon for 20 lepta due.

1837: Syra to Alexandria

Letter from Syra to Alexandria 1837

Date: 21 July, 1837 (Julian date)

Postal Markings: Struck with the date-stamp of Syra plus ΠΛHPΩMENON (Paid).

Notes: No postal date-stamp is known for the Greek post office at Alexandria between the date of opening (November 1833) and 1858. This letter was likely carried by a Greek postal courier on board one of the Feraldi sailing ships.

This cover may be the earliest known example of civilian mail between Greece and Alexandria (consular letters are known from 1834).
